From Shee'ah Heresy to Saudi Radicalism!
“Even as Democrats in the U.S. Congress work overtime to manufacture a U.S. defeat in Iraq, and their domestic supporters and well-wishers outside of America cheer them on, there is another devious battle unfolding in the Middle East.
The sectarian conflict inside Iraq was ignited with demonic precision by the al-Qaida forces. Their publicly announced purpose was to derail the unfolding democratic process set in motion by elections within a constitutional framework, and wreck the hopes of the Iraqi people for freedom and decent living.
But the politics of the greater Middle East are a labyrinth unfathomable to the average Westerner.
Arabs are predominantly Sunni Muslims, and more than 80% of Muslims worldwide adhere to Sunni Islam.
Iran, however, is a majority Shiite Muslim country, ethnically Persian speaking, and has seen itself historically as besieged within the wider Sunni Muslim world.
Conversely, Sunni Arabs have viewed Shiite Muslims in their midst - as in Lebanon and Iraq - suspiciously, even bordering on contempt, as an alien entity. The word for Persian in Arabic is \"ajami,\" meaning a foreigner, and those who are Shiite Arabs are considered doubly foreign for being disloyal to the collective identity of Sunni Arabs.
More importantly, Sunni Arabs -- particularly Arabs of the Middle East, the region between the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf -- view Shiites as heretics, more contemptible than non-believers. Who are the Shee’ah?
The writer has indicated here to the reader (most of whom will be non-Muslim) that the Shee’ah are besieged by the ‘sunni world’ and that particularly in the Arab world, they are considered ‘heretics’. If one didn’t know any better, one my think that the shee’ah are a small group of Muslims persecuted by the Arab world. The reality is, that the shee’ah are a group that formulated and spawned by a Jew (‘Abdullaah Ibn Saba’) not long after the death of the Prophet Muhammad (may Allaah Raise His Rank and Grant him Peace) and it is they who laid siege upon Islam and the way of Muhammad (may Allaah Raise His Rank and Grant him Peace) by declaring Ai’ishah (the wife of the Prophet) to be lewd and promiscuous, that Aboo Bakr and ‘Umar two of the closest disciples of Muhammad to be liars, treacherous and labelled them ‘the idols of (the tribe of) Quraish’ and considered all but a select few Companions of the Messenger to be believers, those who penned in their writings that some of the Companions were more evil than Shaytaan (Satan)! They broke away from the main body of the Muslims (ahlus-sunnah – the people of the Sunnah, followers of Muhammad and his Companions) took to bigotry, in falsely claiming the ‘Ali (May Allaah be pleased with him) was swindled out of the khilafah (leadership) of the Muslim nation, following the death of Muhammad (may Allaah Raise His Rank and Grant him Peace). They broke away in to too many groups to mention, some still within the fold of Islam and most outside the fold of Islam for their bigoted hatred of the Companions of Muhammad and his beloved wife.
The writer contends that the mainstream sunni Muslim view that the shee’ah (particularly the raafidah shee’ah of Iran) are heretical, originates from scholars of the middle ages such as Ibn Tamiyyah and Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhab.

despite mentioning nothing of the partisan, bigoted and vile attacks of the shee’ah on most of the beloved community of Muhammad (may Allaah Raise His Rank and Grant him Peace) of whom he said were, ‘The Best of People’.
Statements of the Classical Scholars of Islam about the Shee’ah
Now keep in mind, the shee’ah originated at the time of Muhammad’s (May Allaah Raise His Rank and Grant him Peace) Companions, so these scholars were not the first to speak out against the bigotry and hatred that the Shee’ah brought to the Muslims, in fact they were spoken of by the Companions themselves, and scholars well before the time of the aforementioned scholars:
Imaam ash-Shaafi‘ee (d. 204H – approx 1000 years before the aforementioned Ibn Abd al Wahhab and only 204 years after the migration of Muhammad to Madeenah)
On one occasion, ash-Shaafi‘ee said concerning the Shee‘ah, \"I have not seen among the heretics a people more famous for falsehood than the Raafidee Shee‘ah.\"  On another occasion he said, \"Narrate knowledge from everyone you meet except the Raafidee Shee‘ah, because they invent Hadeeths and adopt them as part of their religion.\"

And then there is the statement of the Imaam of Spain (Andaloos in Arabic), which was ruled by the Muslims for close to 1000 years without any form of violence or persecution of people of other religions.
Ibn Hazm al-Andaloosee (d. 465H)
One day during the period of Muslim rule in Spain, Imaam Aboo Muhammad Ibn Hazm was having a debate with some Spanish Catholic priests about their religious texts. He brought before them evidence of textual distortions in the Bible and the loss of original manuscripts. When they replied by pointing out to him Shee‘ee claims also being distorted, Ibn Hazm informed them that \"The Shee‘ah could not be used as evidence against the Qur’aan or against Muslims because they are not themselves Muslims.\"
 Related by Ibn Hazm in al-Fisaal fil-Milal wan-Nihaal (2/78) and (4/182).
So we see the staunch and necessary clarification by Islamic scholars from the early ages, well before Ibn Taymiyyah, freeing Islam from the extremism and bigotry of the shee’ah. These writings were intended to protect Islam from falsehood and deviation. The writer, however, wishes to conclude that considering the Raafidee Shee’ah as heretics was made famous by scholars of the middle ages, which may lead the reader to believe that previously, the shee’ah were considered within the fold of Islam and persecuted later which is most misleading.
Connecting Disassociation with the Shee’ah to Saudi Arabia and to the Terrorism of al-Qaida!
This view was popularized by ibn Taimiyyah (1263-1328), the intellectual mentor of ibn Abd-al Wahhab (1703-1792) whose sectarianism is the version of Sunni Islam officially practiced in and promoted by the Saudi kingdom. It is this Sunni bigotry that gave birth to radical Islamism of al-Qaida and associates with their ideological fantasy of recreating the medieval Islamic empire (caliphate).
The writer hop-scotches on, quickly linking these classical scholars to Saudi Arabia to al-Qaida all in a few strokes of a keyboard thus implying
a) The shee’ah were considered heretics in the middle ages of Islam and have since been oppressed
b) The Saudi Kingdom (and therefore it’s schools, educational institutes and curriculums) have adopted this sectarianism
c) This all gave way to the foundation of ‘al-Qaida’
Are you still with us? Quite an association indeed. Firstly, the ideology of ‘al-qaida’ or as we more rightly call them ‘al-khawaarij’ (The Renegades) as their methodology of spilling blood far pre-dates the now infamous term ‘al-qaida’, in addition, there are numerous minuscule bands of these people who all affirm some of the characteristics of the khawaarij, despite having no official affiliation to ‘al-qaida’. This group originated from when the Prophet Muhammad (May Allaah raise His Rank and Grant him Peace) was still alive. They were spoken of by Muhammad (May Allaah raise His Rank and Grant him Peace)
In a hadeeth (narration) narrated by Abu Sa`id, the Prophet (May Allaah raise His Rank and Grant him Peace) was distributing some gold that had been sent back by `Ali Ibn Abi Taalib (his Comapanion). One man, after receiving his share, was displeased with his portion. This man, by the name of `Abdullah ibn Dhil Khawaisara At-Tamimi stepped forward and said, “Be just O Messenger of Allah!” The Prophet  answered him thusly, “Woe be to you! Who would be just if I were not to be?” `Umar ibn Al-Khattab said, “O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to cut off his neck!” The Prophet  said, “Leave him, for he has companions, and if you compare your prayers with their prayers and your fasting with their fasting, you will look down upon your prayer and fasting, in comparison to theirs. Yet they will go out of the religion as an arrow goes through the body of the game in which case, if the one part of the arrow is examined, nothing will be found on it. And when its other part is examined, nothing will be found on it; and then its other part is examined, nothing will be found on it.
“The arrow has been too fast to be smeared by dung and blood. The sign by which these people will be recognised will be a man whose one hand will be like the small breast of a woman. These people will appear when there will be differences among the people.”
In another quote,
It was narrated by Abu Sa`id al Khudri, “When `Ali was in Yemen, he sent some gold in its ore to the Prophet (May Allaah raise His Rank and Grant him Peace). The Prophet (May Allaah raise His Rank and Grant him Peace) then distributed it among Al-Aqra bin Habis al Hanzali who belonged to Bani Mujashi, Uyaina bin Badr al-Fazari, Alqama bin Ulatha Al-Amiri, who belonged to the Bani Kilab tribe and Zaid al Khalik At-Ta’i who belonged to Bani Nabhan. Then the Quraish and the Ansar became angry and said; ‘He gives to the chiefs of Najd and leaves us!’ The Prophet (May Allaah raise His Rank and Grant him Peace) said, ‘I just wanted to attract and unite their hearts.’ Then there came a man with sunken eyes, bulging forehead, thick beard, fat raised cheeks and clean shaven head and said, ‘O Muhammad, fear Allah!’ The Prophet  said, ‘Who would obey Allah if I disobeyed Him? He trusts me over the people of the earth, but you do not trust me?’ A man from the people, who, I think, was Khalid ibn al Walid, asked for permission to kill him, but the Prophet  prevented him. When the man went away, the Prophet  said, ‘Out of the offspring of this man there will be people who will recite the Qur’an but it will not go past their throats, and they will go out of Islam as an arrow goes our through the game.
The preceding narration would give light to the fact that these extremists would be praying, practising Muslims, yet they would have great hypocrisy and evil within them, “of this man there will be people who will recite the Qur’an but it will not go past their throats”
So from their origin was rising up against the Muslim leadership, openly rebuking the rulers, raising discontent publically and seeking to assassinate the leaders of the Muslim whether they were just or unjust. They killed Ali Ibn Abee Taalib and countless other Companions of the Prophet Muhammad (May Allaah raise His Rank and Grant him Peace). To this day, their methodology exists amongst an extremely small minority of the Muslims as we have seen many of the Muslim rulers attacked or assassinated, along with scholars, police and any other civilians caught in the crossfire.
They have been warned against by the moderate Islamic scholars throughout Islamic history, and the aforementioned Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Abd al-Wahhaab that the writer shows disdain for were no different,
Ibn Taymiyyah clarifies that the Khawaarij (Renegades) were not only those who faught against Ali but would exist till near the end of time:
“And this sign which the Messenger of Allah mentioned would be the sign for the first people of the Khawaarij. But they are not the only people that are spoken of in these verses because He (May Allaah raise His Rank and Grant him Peace) mentioned in other hadith that they would still keep coming until the age of the Dajjal (Anti Christ).
“It is concluded by the Muslims that the Khawaarij are not the only Khawaarij mentioned in the battles with `Ali in the battle of Nahraawaan.” Majmu`a Fataawa, V. 28, page 495-496.
So in the writings of Ibn Abd al-Wahhab and Ibn Taymiyyah you find condemnation for the Khawaarij, those who set out to kill the rulers and establish wars on established governments. And it is in recent times that we see the abduction and murder of non-Muslims in Muslim countries, this is because they hope that by doing this, they will create great upheaval and destroy the established relationships between the Muslim nations and non-Muslim nations, to create instability for the governments and most of all, to create an atmosphere of disdain from the Muslim rulership so that they can generate support for a revolution of sorts. It is interesting that Saudi Arabia is singled out as a spiritual birthplace of ‘al-qaida’-like preaching. I remember during my visits to Saudi Arabia, seeing how heavily guarded government institutes are, how the shopping centres have checkpoints (like we would expect at a border crossing) with armed guards, just to go shopping and maybe eat Baskin Robbins ice-cream. So why then would all this be necessary, seeing that Saudi Arabia is akin to violence, revolution and is the birthplace of such methodologies, why is it, that the theological figureheads of this movement in our time, Sayyid Qutb, Mawdudi and others (most of which are non-Saudis) attacked the Muslim rulership, why is it that Bin Ladin considered the ruling government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Yemen and who knows where else, to be disbelievers, their blood lawful and the blood of all civilians who support them (such as police, civil servants etc.)? For centuries, this has been a problem the Muslim nations from the West to the East have been burdened with.
The Highest authority for Islamic Verdicts in Saudi Arabia had this to say about Terrorism in 1988, before the infamous term ‘war on terror’ was coined,
“Whoever has been legislatively convicted of carrying out terrorist activities or causing mischief upon the earth, upsetting security by transgressing upon life and private or public property, such as blowing up buildings, Mosques, schools, hospitals, factories, bridges, depositories of weapons or water, public services such as oil pumps, blowing up or hijacking planes and so on. Whoever is convicted of engaging in such activities is to be sentenced to death due to the evidences that prove that this type of mischief upon the earth necessitates that the perpetrator is killed. Because of the extreme danger of such people who engage in terrorist activities and the harm they cause is way greater than highway robbers who murder their victims and steal their wealth.
Before carrying out the aforementioned sentence, Islaamic courts and lawyers must prove it without a shadow of a doubt, providing the necessary evidence to convict the culprit, in order to free themselves of any guilt, and in being precautious, acting upon what this country stands for, in relation to taking all measures and going through all procedures in proving that the culprit is guilty of such crimes, deserving of the punishment.
The committee of Major scholars sees it fit to broadcast the punishment of this crime in the media.\"

And there were other advices to, and later condemnation and warning against the likes of Bin Laden the Scholars of Islam (such as Ibn Baaz, Mufti of Saudi Arabia and Muqbil Ibn Haadee, Imam of Yemen) long before they popped up on FBI most-wanted lists, in fact, not too many years after they were supported by Western governments in Afghanistan!
How is it that the highest religious authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia can condemn Terrorism and revolutionaries such as Bin Laden, long before and after 9/11 and at the same time be the launching-pad for such extremism, hopefully the reader can deduce, something just doesn’t add up.
During a recent trip to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, I remember listening to Shaykh Ahmad an-Najmee, the Muftee of the Jizaan area of Saudi Arabia, give a lecture in a mosque called the Ibn Baaz Mosque, in which it was broadcast on loud-speakers throughout the neighbourhood, this noble Scholar was speaking in detail about the khawaarij, their figureheads, their evil, their declaring of the Muslims as non-Muslims and their destruction of non-Muslim ‘guests’ in the Muslim lands, on work visas, travels etc. and scholastically educated the common-folk on their evil, corruption and propaganda. There was no armed invasion of the mosque by bandits, no government officials who stormed in to condemn and lock up the speaker, in fact he is appointed by the highest Islamic authority as the highest Islamic official in the Jezaan area of Saudi Arabia. It would do the writer good, to read the post:

so that he could read the statements of the scholars about the ‘al-qaida’ likes and their methodology, so that he could be more accurate in his accounts and more factual. It is utterly disappointing that such rhetoric is continuously spun by those within our own Muslim communities and presented to the non-Muslim audience. It is this ‘bigotry’ and ‘partisanship’ that the writer needs to address.
