The Key Differences Between Islam and Christianity PDF Print E-mail

The similarities between Islam, Christianity and Judaism are often discussed but what is it that sets Islam apart from Christianity?
Speaker: Dawud Adib (Reverted American Muslim of over 25 yrs.) Source:  Belfast Islamic Centre, Queen's University and islaam.ca Given: Apr. 2005
O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, nor say of Allah aught but the truth. The Messiah 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), was (no more than) a Messenger of Allah and His Word, ("Be!" - and he was) which He bestowed on Maryam (Mary) and a spirit (Ruh) created by Him; so believe in Allah and His Messengers. Say not: "Three (trinity)!" Cease! (it is) better for you. For Allâh is (the only) One Ilâh (God), Glory be to Him (Far Exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is All Sufficient as a Disposer of affairs. (An-Nisa 4:171)

The Key Difference Between Islam and Christianity @ Queen'sSome people respect the Islamic belief but consider it unnecessary to become 'Muslims.' This lecture was given to an audience of Muslims and Christians (both Catholics and Protestants) in predominantly Christian, N. Ireland. Belfast is a city which was wrecked by paramilitary war for decades in which Catholics and Protestants have often considered each others version of Christianity as something foreign, the religion of Islam is something distant and unknown to many in the province, this lecture was given to promote dialogue, discussion and eventual agreement that Allah (Almighty God) is to be worshiped alone, furthermore that the call of Moses, Jesus and all other prophets of this One, True God was 'one call', a monotheistic call which is the basis of Islam.

From the topics discussed:

  • The Nature of 'God'
  • Anthropomorphism
  • Muhammad, the Muslim substitue for Jesus (in divinity)?
  • Multiple Messengers, a Single Message (Tawheed - Montheism)
  • Prophets: Divinely commissioned not solely 'Divine'
  • The Concept of the 'Trinity'
  • Extensive Q&A with the Audience

The Creator of the Universe stated in the Qur'an:

And they (Jews, Christians and pagans) say: Allah has begotten a son (children or offspring). Glory be to Him (Exalted be He above all that they associate with Him). Nay, to Him belongs all that is in the heavens and on earth, and all surrender with obedience (in worship) to Him. (Al-Baqarah 2:116)

“Say: O people of the Scripture: Come to an agreement between us and you: that we shall worship none but Allah (God), and that we shall ascribe no partners to unto Him, and that none of us shall take lords besides Allah (God). And if they turn away, then say: Bear witness that we are they who have surrendered (unto Him).” (Qur’an: 5:72)

So if they dispute with you (Muhammad) say: "I have submitted myself to Allah (in Islam), and (so have) those who follow me." And say to those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and to those who are illiterates (Arab pagans): "Do you (also) submit yourselves (to Allah in Islam)?" If they do, they are rightly guided; but if they turn away, your duty is only to convey the Message; and Allah is All-Seer of (His ) slaves. (Aali Imran 3:20)
